If you want to use a general ledger account in Xero that you have previously archived, you can restore it. In this guide, we will restore an account that has been archived in Xero’s demo company.

To get to the right area of Xero, go to Accounting → Chart of accounts from the main menu.
How to Restore an Archived an Account
To restore an archived general ledger account, click on the Archive tab on the Chart of Accounts screen:
From here, you can restore any accounts that are not locked. Accounts that are locked have a padlock symbol instead of a checkbox next to the account name. For this exercise, we will restore the 473 – Repairs and Maintenance account. To do this:
- Tick the checkbox next to the name of the account.
- Click on Restore at the top of the accounts list.
Once you are finished, Xero will show you a message confirming that the account has been restored:
Now you can post items to the Repairs and Maintenance general ledger account just like any other active account.
