Xero Invoices – How to Add a Payment Service

Adding payment services such as PayPal or Stripe to your sales invoices is a great way of helping to manage your cash flow. In this tutorial, we will add a payment service to Xero in the demo company. In a second tutorial, we will learn how to include payment services on your invoices so your customers can pay you quickly and easily.

To get to the right place in Xero, go to Settings in the main menu and then click on Payment Services in the Features section:


How to Add a Payment Service to Xero

In the next screen, you should see a few PayPal payment services already set up in the demo company. To set up a new service, click on the + Add Payment Services button. In this exercise, we will set up a Stripe account, so choose Stripe from the drop-down list:


In the pop-up box that appears, we need to enter in the details of our Stripe account:

  • Name: type in the name Stripe.
  • Credit card logos to appear on your invoice: untick the Discover and JCB card options and leave the rest active.
  • Payment Account: choose 090 – Business Bank Account.
  • Automate my fees: tick the checkbox.
  • Fees account: choose 404 – Bank Fees.
  • Charge my customer a processing fee: leave this unticked.


Click on the Connect to Stripe button when you are ready to proceed.

In this tutorial, we are not going to connect to a live Stripe account. If you are following this tutorial in order to connect to a live Stripe account for a real business, you would do one of the following:

  1. Sign into your existing Stripe account.
  2. Sign up for an account if you do not have one.


Once you have connected your Stripe account to Xero, you will be able to see it as a payment service in the Payment Services screen. Because I did not connect to a live Stripe account in this tutorial, mine shows as pending authentication. If you connected to a real Stripe account, you will not see that message and your Stripe account will be active and ready to use:


Adding Payment Services to Invoices
